When we took over Lawrence & Scott, we envisioned renewing and refreshing the brand with a new line that is exceptionally crafted, minimalistic, modern, and sustainably produced. We drew our inspiration from our combined heritage (Asian and Scandinavian) and experience from our travels to create the Lawrence & Scott Malmo series.
After some experimentation, the silhouette of the pagodas in Japan lends itself to the form of a lamp. Tall, majestic, layered, and rich with stories, pagodas are quintessential shapes of the East. Abstracting the silhouette and drawing from the minimalism of Scandinavian designs, the basis of the shape was formed. Lawrence & Scott lamps have always been substantial and sophisticated, and the material choice was clear. It should be sustainably harvested wood, one that is dense with stunning grains to reflect the stories behind the pagodas. Walnut became our first choice.
Creating the rings that make up the Malmo series takes many steps. Not only is each piece created out of the same walnut board, we carefully select the right sites to cut such that the grain pattern for each finished piece would match from top to bottom. In short, while each Malmo is uniquely handcrafted, each one is an intentionally set that combines to form a whole. Every ring is cut, turned, and polished using our proprietary 12-step process, creating a surface that does not require chemicals to shine. In fact, we only finish the lamp using natural oils.
The table lamps and the Malmo pendant are both adorned with one of our made-in-house lampshades on a Euro mount, creating a gentle light spread without any shadow from intruding shade frames.
Sustainability goes beyond material choice and production process. We also aim to eliminate waste and consider usability at all times. The Malmo pendants are intentionally designed with traditional sockets instead of proprietary, irreplaceable LED modules that are difficult, if not impossible, to replace. This feature makes the Malmo a fantastic choice for commercial installation as it can be easily maintained by the end-users. There is no need to return the units for repair if LED modules go out, which they invariably will. With Malmo, you install it once, and it would last forever.
We are excited that designers and editors have accepted our vision and have used the Malmo series for their client’s homes and offices. House Beautiful has mentioned the Malmo Model S as one of the most unique lamps to add personality to a space, and the Malmo Twist Glass Pendant has garnered an ADEX Platinum design award. As time goes on, we are going to continue to expand the Malmo line to delight designers and other discerning clients.
